From the 1^st January 2007 Bulgarian and Romania nationals are able to move and reside freely in any EU member state. Bulgarian an Romanian Nationals that want to work in the UK need to obtain permission from the UKBA before starting any employment unless they are exempt to do so.

The process for applying for a permission to work has two steps:

• The employer needs to apply for a work permit with the UKBA
• Once the employment has been approved in the form of a Letter of Approval, the worker need to make an application for the Accession Worker Card (Purple Card)
